Yoga Classes

Students are welcome to attend on a casual / drop-in basis unless run as a course. However, as in any place of learning, progression and understanding of the system taught reaps more profound benefits when attending regularly and consistently. All sessions are in person.

Most classes, regardless of level, begin with the sequence of caranas (joint warm-up) and progress through a sequence of standing work (either preludes or karanas) to prepare for the seated (āsana) activity.

The beauty of the Shadow Yoga system is that from the beginning the student utilises very simple movements to create a strong foundation upon which to build. The joint warm-up removes excessive stiffness in the joints and connective tissue, the proceeding squats build strength, stamina and promote good digestion and strong bones. The preludes taught develop co-ordination, rhythm and improved respiration. The karanas, along with the increased use of uddiyana bandha (the abdominal “tie”), profoundly increase the ability of the student to become more centred and to feel more of the subtleties of the practice.

Students are not pushed beyond their natural limits and alternatives and adjustments are given. Yoga is not a one size fits all exercise programme but a process of self-cultivation for each individual.

Workshops & Intensives

Pregnancy Yoga

Just as yoga is not a one size fits all exercise programme, pregnancy, birth and the immediate few months post-partum are different for each person.

We may have strong or fixed ideas as to how we would like our pregnancy and birth to go. However, things do not always pan out the way we predict.

Approaching pregnancy and birth through the yoga can prepare one well by keeping the body strong and supple. Working with pelvic floor exercises and breathing techniques can keep the mind focused and calm. When we are confident in our inherent ability then we are able to adapt when and if the need arises.
